The accommodation
The Olive House is a recently renovated 5-bedroom stone farmhouse with air conditioning and stunning panoramic views, set in 25 acres of olive groves with space to relax, either inside or outside by the large saltwater pool. From the farmhouse you will have 360 views of rolling farmland with the backdrop of the massive Gran Sasso mountains looming 10,000 feet above the farmhouse. Forty minutes to the plains at the top and the same to the Adriatic sea.
The ground floor of the farmhouse has one very large living room with a well-equipped kitchen, dining area, lounge area, a bathroom and a smaller room nearby that serves as a second reception room or 5th bedroom. On the first floor are 4 generous bedrooms, 3 of which have ensuite bathrooms, one a balcony. The ground floor reception/5th bedroom has level access and an easy access to the bathroom directly opposite. Three of the first-floor bedrooms have king sized beds, one two singles. The ground floor accommodation has a single bed with a trundle that can be used as a double or as two singles. There is a washing machine in the ground floor bathroom. There is a further trundle bed on the first floor as well as two cots. For younger children there is a Stoke highchair, two IKEA highchairs, a child’s bath, potty and a child monitor. Two towels are supplied per person. Access to the house is from 16.00 on the day of arrival until 10.00 on the day of departure to allow the cleaners enough time to clean the house before the next guests arrive. For the avoidance of doubt there is an outhouse next to the pool that you can see in the photos. This is not part of the rental (although the outside kitchen that is attached to it is) and is used by us when we are staying. If you do rent the house, we offer complete privacy and that outhouse will be vacant during your stay and all the land (25 acres) and the pool is for your exclusive private use.
The surroundings
The large private saltwater pool (13m x 5m) has a shallow paddling section on one side that offers a play area for younger children. There are plenty of loungers and an outside kitchen that offers extra shade near the pool with a table, fridge and plenty of seating. The pool is heated for off season use.
We are happy to recommend and help you organise local restaurants, a visit to a winery, as well as a local chef to cook a meal at the house, cooking lessons with a local Nonna, Pilates/Yoga classes or a massage by a professional masseuse, either at her nearby house or at the Olive House.
Getting to the Olive House
Flights are either from Stansted on Ryanair to Pescara or from multiple locations to Rome
From Pescara the journey to the farmhouse is 40 minutes. Pescara is a small regional airport that allows easy access for car hire with a short walk from the terminal. From Rome the journey time is about 3 hours and there is also an easy bus connection from the airport direct to the local city of Pescara.
Or – what about the train? Via Paris and Milan on the way out and Bologna and Burgundy on the way back. Romantic, relaxing and inspirational. If you have the time (4-5 days) this is undoubtedly a wonderful alternative to flying.
The Abruzzo
An unspoilt part of central Italy separated by much of the rest of Italy by the massive Apennine Mountains on one side and the Adriatic Sea on the other. Rural, stunning mountain and seascape scenery, un-touristic and still clinging to ancient traditions.
There are picturesque local hilltop towns, good nearby wineries and excellent local restaurants.
A region apart – the history, culture and landscape of Abruzzo Arriving in the Abruzzo region for the first time, you might think you were somewhere other than Italy. Separated from the rest of the country by the Apennine mountains, it was not until the 1960s and the building of tunnels connecting the region with Rome and Bologna, that travel became feasible. Its economy remains almost entirely agricultural and self-sufficient, geographically defined by the borders of the Gran Sasso, the highest part of the Apennines on one side and the Adriatic Sea on the other. Small wonder that Abruzzese food traditions are a reflection of its landscape as well as its people and that, more than other parts of Italy, it has retained its links to traditional produce and cultures. These unique features make Abruzzo such a special region to experience the close connection with its food culture, traditions and with seasonal and local ingredients. Abruzzo is also recognised as the greenest region in Europe as almost half of its territory, the largest in Europe, is set aside as national parks and protected nature reserves. These ensure the survival of 75% of Europe's living species, including rare species such as the small wading dotterel, the golden eagle, the Abruzzese chamois, the Apennine wolf and the Marsican brown bear.
